Three teams of ten, represented Summit Motorsports Park over the weekend at the annual NHRA Jr Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals presented by ViperizerRacing.com. Many of the families headed down the weekend prior to participate in activities that were held earlier in the week. But the actual event did not begin until Thursday July 24th.
Throughout the weekend, the teams had plenty of ‘bonding’ time. Many of the kids took advantage of the water park that was set up on the property for the kids to enjoy. The grandstands, pit areas and pit vehicles were decorated in a Mardi Gras theme. Thursday evening, a pizza party was held and the kids received goodie bags filled with surprises and their team t-shirt.
During the event, the racers were not only racing for class and team championship honors but for other awards such as best appearing car, best appearing theme car, cool car, best-package and best reaction time. In the first round, the best reaction time was awarded in each age division. Alexa Hurst had the best reaction time for the 8-9 year old class with a .004 while Ava Lawson’s reaction time of .003 rewarded her with the honors for the ten-year old division.
Fourteen of the thirty racers were able to advance into the second round of competition. Alexa Hurst (8-9 years) representing the Blue Team made it to the quarterfinals and Taylor Young (16-17 years) also from the Blue Team made it the 5th round.
Summit Motorsports Park teams was in the running for the Team Spirit Award and gave the other tracks in contention a run for their money, but in the end, Maple Grove Raceway was given the honors.
