NORWALK, Ohio – Sawmill Creek Resort offers rest, refreshment and rich northern Ohio heritage when racing stills at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
“We’re the largest resort in Ohio,” said Greg Hill, president of Sawmill Creek Resort, 400 Sawmill Creek Drive, Huron, Ohio 44839, on the Web at www.sawmillcreek.com, and by telephone at 800-SAWMILL, or 800-729-6455.
“We have 235 acres and about a half mile of waterfront on Lake Erie,” Greg Hill said. “It’s an independent hotel with great expression of this Lake Erie Region.”
Drawing on life-long interior design and construction experience, Greg Hill bought the lakefront portion of the Sawmill Creek property in 1997 and built 200 condominiums. Then in 1998 he bought and renovated the 236-room hotel, opening up scenic views and adding a North American Woodland Indian Museum in a three-story-tall domed rotunda.
“The hotel has been completely renovated,” Greg Hill said. “It expresses this region. We talk about wildlife that was in Ohio, but isn’t here now. And the original settlers, who were Indians.”
Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie in beautiful Huron, Ohio, about 15 miles north of Summit Motorsports Park, Sawmill Creek emerged as a picturesque vacation destination.
The casual atmosphere offers rest and comforts rich in northern Ohio lore, traditions and foods.
“If you’re coming to the Lake Erie Region, why wouldn’t you want to stay in a hotel that reflects this region?” Greg Hill said. “The biggest thing is we’re on the lakeshore. We have beaches you can walk on. Everyone, we hope, would like to see Lake Erie while they’re here.”
Four restaurants open for the summer offer casual dining:
• Salmon Run, inside the hotel.
• Black Bear Saloon, inside the hotel.
• Mullligan’s Pub, at the Sawmill Creek Golf Course.
• Mariners, dockside dining at the Sawmill Creek Marina.
“They all have outdoor dining with them, and their own bars,” Greg Hill said, adding visitors who are not staying at the hotel may frequent the restaurants and bars also.
“As of two weeks ago, we redid our menus,” Greg Hill said. “We’re reflecting the foods from this region, like yellow perch, walleye, salmon. Our steaks are locally cut here. We have Ohio grains in some of our breads, so we’re going to express local items.”
With a vision for creating a vacation destination link in Northern Ohio, Greg Hill signed Sawmill Creek as the official resort and official hotel of Summit Motorsports Park.
“Being from Norwalk, I was very familiar with the Bader family,” Greg Hill said. “I’ve certainly enjoyed what they have done out there at Summit Motorsports Park. It’s a real asset for Norwalk. It benefits the tourism for this region. It’s been excellent. We appreciate it.”
Sawmill Creek offers its own style of multi-faceted recreational excellence.
“We have a Tom Fazio Championship 18-hole Golf Course,” Greg Hill said. “Tom Fazio is the number one architect for building golf courses.
“Sawmill Shops is a little shopping center with ladies’, men’s and children’s items,” Greg Hill said. “It’s a really nice shopping center. People from the community like to come out to shop.
“The marina holds 176 slips. We take out fishing charters. We have a cruise ship,” Greg Hill said. “A ferry used to go from Sandusky to Cedar Point for 25 years. We bought it. We take people out on the lake. We have jet ski rentals and bike rentals.
“We have a couple of beaches here that are nice big beaches,” Greg Hill said. “Our neighbor is Sheldon’s Nature Preserve with 500 acres of woods, marshes, meadows and a sand beach also with a barrier reef which protects the main one.”
From the initial inquiries to welcoming guests into a truly Ohio experience, Greg Hill enjoys plying his giftedness in hospitality.
“It’s a nice business,” Greg Hill said. “You get to meet a lot of people, and they’re here for a good time. It’s very upbeat.
“The 200 condominiums I designed and built myself. That’s very fun,” Greg Hill said. “And in the hotel business you can be very creative, and that’s always fun.”
