Don Garlits to Race at Blue Suede Cruise

July 24- The last time Don Garlits screamed down the Norwalk quarter mile; it was during Norwalk’s 40th Anniversary Celebration at Night Under Fire.  He returns in 2006!  And he will run again this weekend at the Blue Suede Cruise in an early edition Swamp.  He will also be on hand throughout the weekend for autographs and pictures.

Big Daddy Don Garlits was just getting used to his new nickname when Norwalk Dragway opened in 1963.  (NHRA announcer Bernie Partridge gave Garlits the nickname at the 1962 US Nationals.)

The Blue Suede Cruise is an event dedicated to the little part of each of us that either wants to return to the 1950’s, or go there for the first time.  Bill Bader Jr. made the announcement of Garlit’s return to Norwalk at the Bar’s Leaks Awards Banquet in January.  Since then, the office has been flooded with calls for more information.  “Big Daddy is the reason drag racing is what it is today,” Bader said recently.  “There is little question that NHRA nailed it when they chose him the number one most influential person in the history of drag racing.”

Be sure to be here for the whole Blue Suede Cruise weekend.  From the racing to the rock and roll concert, the street rods and fun runs what more could you ask for in one weekend of the Norwalk Experience?
