NORWALK, Ohio -- The first round of pro qualifying is in the record books and we have a great track today! Most races have been close with very few tires breaking loose. Hats off to the NHRA track crew for a great surface and to the crew chiefs for exciting door-to-door action. This is a great show!
Each pair in the first round of pro eliminations had ET and mile per hour improvements from qualifying and a track record for speed.
In Top Fuel there were two wins in the left lane and six in the right lane. The big upset was when "The Golden Greek," 81-year-old Chris Karamesines upset Tony Schumacher. The Greek faces Khalid alBalooshi in the next round. Spencer Massey, Bob Vandergriff, Shawn Langdon and Steve Torrence, as well as Karamesines, had improvements in ET and/or speed from their qualifying rounds.
In Funny Car there were just two wins in the right lane, with six wins and a track record coming in the left lane. Courtney Force set a record 319.67 mph in her first round win over Tim Wilkerson. John Force drilled his first round with a 4.025 to face Jack Beckman in the next round. This is one of two tracks on the Mello Yello series where Force does not have a victory (the other is new to the Mello Yello Series this year, Epping, where John faced daughter Courtney and came in with the runner-up). [See second round update below.]
In Pro Stock the right lane had six wins, left one, and Allen Johnson had a bye round. Shane Gray and Jeg Coughlin showed improvements from their qualifying times.
Second round update: John Force lost to Beckman so the Norwalk Wally--and ice cream scoop--will have to wait for Force another year.
