This past weekend we celebrated both the end of one season and the beginning of a new, during the annual Summit Motorsports Park Team Rally, Summit University. It was a packed house, held at Messenberg’s in Huron, OH. The day started out with Bill Jr. providing a very moving and entertaining seminar about being a “Team”, followed by dinner and team awards.
During the awards presentation, the following individuals were recognized for years of dedication to Summit Motorsports Park. A few years ago, Summit Motorsports Park updated the longevity program to reward employees for their dedicated service by creating the “Star Watch” program
Rigel Kentaurus or Alpha Centauri is recognized as the third brightest star in the Milky Way Galaxy. Team Members receiving this award have earned 5 stars in their career at Summit Motorsports Park.
- Jodye Albright (Merchandise)
- Kirk Beat (Track Crew)
- Dottie Langhals (Hospitality)
The next tier in our Star Watch program is Canopus. Canopus is the second brightest star in the sky and was given its name either for the ancient city in northern Egypt or the helmsman for Menelaus. Those Team Members earning their Canopus award have earned 10 stars.
- Melissa Hillman (Operations)
- Rose Isaac (Operations/merchandise
- Sam Lance (Track crew)
- Karl Rishka (Track Crew)
The brightest star in the sky is Sirius, known as the Dog Star. Sirius received its name after the Greek word for scorching. This award recognizes Team Members having served enough years to earn 20 stars. Under our new program, this is our highest recognition.
- Betty Hall (Concessions)
Even though Sirius is our highest recognition, Connie Hurst was acknowledged for having served enough years to reach 30 stars!
Each department then recognized their outstanding Team Member, this year’s recipients were as follows.
- Merchandise - Rhonda Baker
- Park Services – John Westcott
- Jim Herr “Outstanding Food Service” – Betty Hall
- Hospitality – Brenda Arter
- Best Operations – John Scheerer
- Track Crew – D.J. Lubinski
- The Connie Hurst “Outstanding Team Player” - Ken & Pam Lemmon (Hospitality)
- Exceptional Guest Service Team Player – Matt Persson (Park Services)
The last award presented for the evening was the Nick Gollner “Heart of a Lion”. This is the most prestigious award given and is equivalent to the Sportsman of the Year honor awarded to racers. This year, the individual that received this honor was Janet Ready. Janet Ready started her career at Summit Motorsports Park in the summer of 2002 and has served her tenure in the Merchandise Department. Many racers and fans have had the opportunity to get to know Janet over the years.
Janet always wears a smile on her face and a warm greeting for all. She is know for her exceptional friendly services, always willing to lend a helpful hand in assisting guests in finding that special souvenir. Over the years, Janet has taken ownership of the Quarter Mile Clothing Store, tending to the store as if it were her own. The next time you are at Summit Motorsports Park, stop in the store and congratulate Janet and let her help you find that special gift to take home!
