Norwalk, Ohio - Some honors recognize a moment. Some recognize an accomplishment. And then there are honors that somehow capture a lifetime the sacrifices, the risks, the victories, the heartbreaks, the people, the memories and the countless hours no one else ever sees. This is one of those honors. A heartfelt congratulations to our Commander in Chief, Bill Bader on being named to the inaugural Drag Illustrated Power 100, recognizing 100 of drag racing’s most influential people, with Bill earning his place in the Visionary category. For those of us who know Bill and have had the privilege of watching him lead, this recognition means so much more than seeing his name printed on a page.

Because Bill Bader Jr.’s story has never simply been about owning a racetrack. It is the story of a son who inherited his father’s dream and understood the tremendous responsibility that came with it. When the late Bill Bader Sr. purchased the track in 1973, he built something that would eventually become far greater than tremendous grandstands and a quarter-mile of concrete and asphalt. He built a place where people belonged. A place where families spent their summers. A place where racers chased dreams, children found heroes and friendships were formed that would last lifetimes. When Bill Jr. took the reins, he didn't simply have a business to run. He had a legacy to protect. And for decades, he has done exactly that while refusing to allow that legacy to stand still.

He dreamed bigger. He took chances. He made investments. He pushed boundaries. He fought through difficult seasons and celebrated incredible ones. He continued building upon what his father started while putting his own unmistakable fingerprint on the place we are so proud to call America's Racetrack. There have been major events, packed grandstands, facility expansions, unforgettable races and nights when the entire property seemed to shake. But perhaps Bill’s greatest impact cannot be measured by attendance numbers, trophies, ticket sales or the size of an event. It can be measured in generations. It is the father walking through our gates holding the hand of his son or daughter. It is the grandfather sitting in the grandstands with his grandchildren, telling them about the races he watched from those same seats decades earlier. It is the racer who grew up coming here as a child and eventually pulled into the staging lanes in a race car of their own. It is the families who plan their summers around Norwalk. The fans who have sat in the same section for years. The racers who know exactly what it feels like to turn off Route 18 and see the Summit Motorsports Park sign in the distance. It is hearing someone say, "I have been coming here for 30 years." Those are the things Bill has spent his life protecting. Because somewhere along the way, this racetrack became more than a racetrack. It became part of people’s lives.

Bill has often spoken about his love for entertaining people, and anyone who has watched him work knows those are not simply words. There is a reason he notices the details. There is a reason he walks the property. There is a reason good enough has never been good enough. There is a reason that after all these years, one philosophy remains at the heart of everything: Our guest comes first. It was a philosophy instilled in him by his father, and it has guided nearly every decision he has made since.Under Bill’s leadership, Summit Motorsports Park has grown into one of the most recognized facilities in the sport and is Ohio's only motorsports stadium. He helped bring an NHRA national event to Norwalk. He continued growing one of drag racing’s most beloved spectacles, the Cornwell Tools Night Under Fire. He has supported sportsman racers and grassroots drag racing while continuing to ask the question that visionaries always ask: What can we do next? And maybe that is why the word "visionary" feels so fitting. A visionary does not simply see what something is. They see what it could become. They are willing to take the chance before everyone else understands it. They are willing to carry the weight of decisions few people ever know about. They are willing to hear that something cannot be done and quietly start figuring out how to do it anyway. That has been Bill. But behind the events, the accomplishments and the recognition is something even more meaningful.

There is still a son carrying forward what his father began. And there is something incredibly powerful about that. Bill Bader Sr. planted the roots of something special in Norwalk all those years ago. Bill Jr. has spent decades making sure those roots grew deeper, the branches stretched farther and the Bader family legacy continued to mean something to every person who walked through these gates. Your dad built something extraordinary, Bill. You made sure his dream never stopped growing. And someday, when the history of this racetrack and this era of drag racing is written, the greatest measure of your influence may not be found in a list of events you created, buildings you constructed or races you promoted. It will be found in the people. The millions of people who have a Summit Motorsports Park story because you kept the gates open for another generation. The racers who got their opportunity. The employees who became family. The fans who found their home here. The children who fell in love with drag racing from these grandstands and grew up to bring children of their own. That is influence. That is legacy. And that is why seeing Bill Bader Jr. recognized among the Drag Illustrated Power 100 as one of this sport’s visionaries feels so incredibly deserved.
